Bangladesh govt may write again to Center seeking ST status for Kurmis

Banerjee told the meeting that her government had written to the Center four times on the issue but had so far failed to find a solution

Calcutta: The West Bengal government is considering writing to the center to grant the Kurmi community a registered tribal status, a senior official said on Wednesday.

He added that the decision was taken after a 45-minute meeting between community representatives and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat.

He told PTI that Banerjee met three representatives of the Kurmi community — Suvendu Mahato, Vijay Mahato and Sunil Mahato — as well as MLAs from the Jangalmahal area and listened to their grievances and demands.

Banerjee told the meeting that her government had written to the Center four times on the issue but had so far failed to find a solution.

“The chief minister assured them that she would consider writing to the center again to meet their demands. She also agreed to set up a new Kurmi Samaj development committee,” the official said.

Senior Ministers Firhad Hakim, Moloy Ghatak and Principal Secretary HK Dwivedi were also present.

Last month, various groups in the Kurmi community held protests for more than three days and blocked railway tracks and roads, demanding that the Kurmi community be included in the List of Scheduled Tribes (ST).
