Berlin: Jamal Musiala’s 89th-minute goal gave Bayern Munich a 2-1 Bundesliga win at Cologne after Borussia Dortmund could only draw on the final day of the season.
Dortmund, who led by two points before the last round, were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Mainz on Saturday, allowing Bayern to top the table with a better goal difference.
Borussia Dortmund will need to win to ensure the end of Bayern’s 10-year title run.
It was the third time Bayern have topped the table on the final day of a season, following Werder Bremen in 1986 and Bayer Leverkusen in 2000.
Dortmund fans were celebrating when Cologne’s Dejan Ljubicic scored an 81st-minute penalty against Bayern – which Bayern needed to win – but Musiala came off the bench four minutes later, And scored four minutes later to send the title to Bayern.
Dortmund started from pole position but Andreas Hanche-Olsen surprised the home fans with a 15th-minute opener for Mainz, with Sebastian Haller converting a first-half penalty save.
Karim Onisiwo then scored Mainz’s second goal with another header in the 24th minute and the visitors looked capable of scoring more against Dortmund’s error-prone defense. For Mainz, only self-esteem is at stake.
Rafael Guerrero pulled one back for Dortmund in the 69th minute, but it was too late for the “black and yellow” when Niklas Sule equalized in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Rani Khedira beat Werder Bremen 1-0 to take Union Berlin into the Champions League. They are fourth in the league, ahead of Freiburg, who lost 2-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt.
With Schalke relegated after a 4-2 defeat at Leipzig, Stuttgart will play a relegation/promotion play-off against the side that finished third in the second division. Stuttgart drew 1-1 with Hoffenheim.
Bochum secured survival with a 3-0 win over 10-man Leverkusen.
