New Delhi: The CBI has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by DIG-level officials to investigate six cases of violence in Manipur referred to it by the state government, officials said on Friday.
Home Minister Amit Shah announced a CBI investigation into six FIRs during his visit to the northeastern state – five involving alleged criminal conspiracy and one involving the general conspiracy.
Based on national references routed through the centre, the CBI formed the SIT and took over the investigation of the case, they said.
Violence erupted in the Northeastern state after a “Tribal Unity March” was organized in the mountains on May 3 to protest the Meitei community’s claim to Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
Since the outbreak of racial violence more than a month ago, nearly 100 people have been killed and more than 300 injured.
