Hyderabad: As New Year’s Eve approaches, people in Hyderabad are busy planning to say goodbye to 2022 with family and friends. When we talk about New Year’s parties and celebrations, it’s all about the use of non-recyclable plastic products. Every year, we see NGOs, civic forums and environmental activists urging people to celebrate Christmas Eve in an environmentally friendly way.
Dha3R is one such NGO working to make the environment a better place. The NGO is urging the people of Hyderabad to celebrate New Year’s parties in an eco-friendly way by avoiding plastic.
“People do a lot of shopping to celebrate the new year, and about 80-90 products are mainly made of plastic. Of these, 50-60% of the items are non-recyclable plastic,” said Venkat Ankam, co-founder of Dha3R.
Calling for collective action to protect nature, the NGO is advising people, especially those hosting parties at home and in gated communities, to reduce their use of plastic by purchasing biodegradable products.
“People can use reusable cutlery (plates, spoons, cups, etc.), reusable pitchers, fabric bunting, flowers, and eco-friendly gifts instead of plastic. Individuals can also drink fruit water or juice instead of carbonated soft drinks and Other drinks. There are many eco shops in Hyderabad where people can buy things to celebrate the new year,” the environmentalist said.
Through its aggressive campaigning, the Hyderabad-based NGO has been able to convince some gated communities in LB Nagar and other parts of the city to celebrate New Year’s Eve in a sustainable manner.
“Our main purpose is to raise awareness for a green party that saves the planet,” he added at the end.
