Hyderabad: The BJP-led coalition government has approved Rs 3 crore to Telangana for the Nutritious Cereals Program 2022-23 under the National Food Security Mission (NFSM).
Interestingly, the federal government has approved Rs 747 crore for Gujarat under NFSM and up to Rs 6043 crore for Karnataka in 2022-23.
The details were shared by Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Responding to a question from BRS MP Manne Srinivas Reddy, the union minister said India is the largest producer and seventh largest exporter of ‘Shree Anna’ by 2021.
Common types of millet grown in India include pearl millet (Bajra), sorghum (Jowar), finger millet (Ragi) and small millet such as millet millet, barnyard millet, kodo millet, puro millet, small millet and two pseudo millet such as buckwheat and amaranth .
To promote and increase the production and productivity of millet (jowar, bajra, ragi and millet), the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has been implementing the Nutritious Cereals (Millet) subtask under the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) since 2018-19, He said
Currently, NFSM-Nutri-Cereals (Millets) are being implemented in different areas of 14 states. He informed that the north-east and hill states have been given flexibility to implement the scheme according to their requirements.
The union minister added that in order to make India a global hub for ‘Shree Anna’, the Indian Institute of Millet Research (IIMR) has been supported as a center of excellence for sharing best practices, research and technology at an international level.
