Hyderabad: The government has introduced new regulations for the export of cough syrup from 1 June 2023. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said cough syrup exporters should have their products tested at designated government laboratories from June 1 before they can be approved for international shipments.
The decision came after cough syrup made in India was allegedly linked to the deaths of 66 children in Gambia and Uzbekistan last year and 18 in Uzbekistan. The DGFT said in the notice, “From June 1, 2023, the export of cough syrup must be tested for export samples and present a certificate of analysis issued by any laboratory before export.”
The central government laboratories listed for testing are National Accreditation Council for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), Indian Pharmacopoeia Board, Regional Drug Testing Laboratories (RDTL, Chandigarh), Central Drug Laboratories (CDL, Kolkata), Central Drug Testing Laboratories (CDTL), Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai) and RDTL (Guwahati).
