Hyderabad: Ten years ago, a 15-year-old male cheetah gifted by a Saudi prince died of a heart attack at the Nehru Zoo in Hyderabad.
The cheetah, named Abdullah, died on Saturday, a zoo official told IANS. Zoo authorities performed an autopsy and found it had died of a heart attack.
Saudi Prince Bandar Bin Saud Bin Mohammed Al Saud announced the gift of two pairs of African lions and cheetahs during his visit to the zoo during the CoP11 summit in Hyderabad – 2012.
The zoo received the animals from Saudi Arabia’s National Wildlife Research Center in 2013.
The female cheetah died in 2020, and the male cheetah “Abdullah” has been alone since then.
Female cheetah “Hiba” died at the age of eight. She was diagnosed with paraplegia.
Paraplegia is a medical condition involving impaired sensory function in the lower extremities and is a classification of paralysis.
After Abdullah’s death, there were no more cheetahs in the Nehru Zoo.
Cheetahs were declared extinct in India about 70 years ago.
Last year, eight cheetahs from Namibia were released into Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh to reintroduce the felines in India.
