BEIJING: A Chinese football club official has publicly apologized for beating a referee.
Duan Xin, the captain of Liaoning’s Shenyang team, was shown a red card and slapped the referee during Sunday’s game against Nanjing for protesting against the referee’s decision.
Duan made a public apology late Monday, saying he should have obeyed the referee’s decision unconditionally, Xinhua reported.
“As the chief culprit, I shamed Chinese football. I did something wrong,” he said in a statement posted on the Shenyang club’s social media accounts.
Duan added that he was aware of the consequences of the matter and was prepared to accept any punishment imposed on him by the Chinese Football Association.
