New Delhi: Congress on Tuesday accused the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government of corruption and called for a high court-supervised probe into the incident, which saw the statue of Lord Shiva vandalized at the Mahakal temple in Ujjain due to strong winds on Sunday afternoon.
The idols of the Saptarishis suffered the most, with several falling to the ground while others had little hands and heads.
Congress Madhya Pradesh head JP Agarwal told a press conference here, “In Karnataka, we created the slogan ‘40% commission government’ and a similar scam has also popped up in Madhya Pradesh at the Mahakal temple. .”

Agarwal said the Mahakal temple in Ujjain, one of the 12 “Jyotirlingas,” is visited by dozens of devotees.
“The renovated temple was inaugurated last year by the prime minister and the whole world watched it on television,” Agarwal said in a sarcasm.
Agarwal said several statues of the ancient god were shattered due to strong winds in the corridors of the famous Mahakal (Lord Shiva) temple.
“The statues, which appear to be defective, were hastily installed ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s visit. The statues cost approximately Rs. broken inside, suggesting they were made of inferior materials,” Agarwal said.
“We asked the High Court judge to look into the whole incident, as concerns about the quality of the statue were also raised earlier, but the state government ignored them,” he said.
Agarwal also demanded an apology from the BJP for “corruption”.
His comments came two days after the Mahakal Lok corridor at the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain suffered extensive damage from strong winds on Sunday afternoon. The idols of the Saptarishis suffered the greatest damage, and several fell to the ground.
