Hella Candy: Congress will launch the “Haate Haath Dhoro” (hold each other’s hands) padayatra on January 28 in Assam’s Barak Valley, state president Bhupen Bora said here on Saturday.
Congress leaders from Mizoram state, which borders the southern Assam region, will also attend the padayatra to improve relations between the two countries, opposition leader Debabrata Saikia said.
The program will start on February 10 at Dholai in Cachar district near the Assam-Mizoram interstate border and end at Malegarh in Karimganj along the India-Bangladesh border.
The 165km padayatra will cover all 15 parliamentary constituencies in the three districts of the region.
Congressional leaders and staff will walk 11 kilometers a day, Barra said.
He said the Barak Valley could not be covered during the 45-day Assam program of the Bharat Jodo Yatra from Golakgunj to Sadiya.
Sekiah said there are many problems along the Assam-Mizoram border and Congress leaders from neighboring states will be involved in plans to improve relations between the two countries.
Last year, at least six police officers and an Assamese civilian were killed in a shootout between police forces in Assam and Mizoram states over a border dispute in the Barak Valley.
