Calcutta: A defamation suit has been filed against a West Bengal minister and Trinamaool Congress speaker for allegedly making derogatory remarks about BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.
The suit was brought by Soumnedu Adhikari, Suvendu Adhikari’s younger brother, in the District Court of Contai, East Midnapore District.
The lawsuit has been filed against Cabinet Minister Shashi Panja, Trinamool State Secretary-General and party spokesman Kunal Ghosh, and Trinamool spokesperson “Jago Bangla”.
Soumendu Adhikari told reporters that for a long time, derogatory and baseless remarks have been made against the opposition leader, even with the recent sacking of non-teaching staff in public schools to label him.
“There is an article in ‘Jago Bangla’ that the 55 dismissed employees were recruited on the advice of Suvendu Adhikari during the Trinamool Congress. These are baseless allegations,” said Soumendu Adhikari.
He also said that before filing the defamation suit on Wednesday, he had sent legal notice to all three parties demanding an unconditional apology for making baseless and derogatory remarks.
“Having heard nothing back, I finally filed a defamation lawsuit against them on Wednesday,” he said.
It is understood that a criminal defamation suit has been filed against Panja and Adhikari under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with penalties for defamation.
