A Delhi court on Tuesday sentenced the two attackers, who were part of a group that surrounded a van in Aaftab Poonawalla, to 14 days in judicial custody.
New Delhi: A Delhi court on Tuesday sentenced the two attackers, who were part of a group that surrounded a van in Aaftab Poonawalla, to 14 days in judicial custody.
The armed duo – Kuldeep Thakur and Nigam Gurjar – were arrested on Monday and appeared in court on Tuesday morning.
According to Delhi Police, Poonawalla’s van was stopped by a car while overtaking outside Rohini Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). He was there to take a polygraph test.
BSF Security is now deployed outside of FSL.
The van was attacked by men who got out of the vehicle and intended to injure Poonawalla. Both men, both residents of Gurgaon, were seen carrying swords. Police said their teams were looking for the remaining attackers.
“The group came in in an impounded car. There were 4-5 individuals. If other people become involved during the questioning, further action will be taken. The police team is also verifying their claims and being linked to them groups,” the officer said.
FIR is registered with the Prashant Vihar Police Station under Sections 186, 353, 147, 148 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code.
In addition, FSL officials administered a nearly seven-hour polygraph test to Poonawalla on Monday.
FSL deputy director Sanjeev Gupta said the polygraph test would likely continue.
The court placed Poonawalla in judicial custody for 13 days on November 26. On November 12, he was arrested on suspicion of strangling the body of his domestic partner and hacking it into 35 pieces. The incident took place in Mehrauli, south of Delhi.
