Hyderabad: Last week we focused on the options available to international students with disabilities. We briefly discussed a few steps students should follow once they have received an offer from a university. Today we will discuss student visas, pre-departure considerations and important contact information that international students should keep while they are at school.
apply for visa
The student visa process is the same for able and disabled persons. Students with disabilities can obtain F1 visas to study in the United States if they meet the requirements of the visa approval process. When scheduling appointments, there is a provision to seek assistance based on an individual’s disability.
Students with disabilities may contact the Customer Service Center at https://ustraveldocs.port-ability.in/in/en/contact-us if they have any questions about accommodation conditions for visa applications and visa interviews. It is important to let the Customer Service Center know in advance Our staff understand the specific requirements to ensure a seamless service during the visa interview process.
Before departure
This can be an especially stressful time for international students with disabilities preparing to travel abroad. Before you go, here are some suggestions to keep in mind.
• The University’s Disability Office is your first stop for any assistance you may have while on campus. Continue to communicate with the Disability Liaison Officer about your requirements to ensure the University has the resources and infrastructure suitable for people with disabilities prior to your arrival.
• Familiarize yourself with host country attitudes and specific terminology for persons with disabilities
• To make travel easier, it may be worth purchasing a compact support device that students may use and includes a basic repair kit/spare for initial maintenance. Make sure the airline understands your needs so you get the right support throughout your journey.Have medical documentation ready in case you need to provide any details during your trip
• Research disability legislation and look for local disability groups and charities who may be able to support you on arrival
On campus:
Once a student arrives on campus, it is important to stay in touch with key disability organizations in the United States, such as MIUSA (Mobile International USA) and the University’s Student Services, so that you are aware of your rights and entitlement opportunities.
