Destination USA: Resources for LGBTQI International Students

International LGBTQI students studying in the US should be aware of the resources available on campus and through LGBTQI organizations

International students who identify as LGBTQI can face unique challenges and not know where to turn for support due to the cultural stigma surrounding such issues.

Recognizing these challenges is critical to better serving all students. In recent years, a growing number of universities across the U.S. have established LGBTQI resource centers to support these students and help them find community.

This is especially important for LGBTQI international students from cultures where it is not encouraged or even safe to explore one’s own sexual orientation or gender identity, as these centers provide a safe and supportive environment for students to develop and explore.

International LGBTQI students studying in the United States should be aware of the resources available on campus and through LGBTQI organizations.

The following links and information are intended to provide prospective international LGBTQI students with a better understanding of these resources:

• Campus Pride: A national nonprofit that assesses the LGBTQI climate at colleges and universities (https://www.campuspride.org/)

• Consortium of Higher Education Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Professionals: a national organization dedicated to achieving equity in all aspects of higher education for LGBTQI students, staff, administrators and alumni (https://www.lgbtcampus.org/ )

• Point Foundation: An organization that provides scholarships and resources to promising LGBTQI students to reach their full academic and leadership potential (https://pointfoundation.org/)

• CenterLink: A membership organization supporting the growth of strong, sustainable LGBTQI community centers across the United States (https://www.centerlink.org/)

• LGBTQI Health Resources: The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provides information on LGBTI health issues and a list of health clinics and service providers that specifically serve the LGBTQI community (https://www.cdc.gov/LGBThealth/healthservices.htm )

• Crisis Intervention: The Trevor Project provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQI youth via phone, text or live chat (https://www.thetrevorproject.org/)

• The Legal Status of LGBTI Issues in the US: Legal protections for LGBTQI people vary by state; the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has created a digital map to illustrate these (https://www.hrc.org/resources/state-equality-index)

The U.S. government and institutions of higher education support the dignity and equality of all people, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or sexual characteristics.
