New Delhi: Ever since the announcement of India’s first professional basketball league, the Elite Pro Basketball League, the league has been making waves whether it’s player signings, trials or salaries.
The league has now released the league’s preseason dates and 12-team rosters with 204 players. The league will also include at least 2 college players on each team, giving them a chance to turn pro.
The preseason is scheduled for February, followed by the main season. The preseason will help the players get to know each other and bond as a team. The most intriguing part of the preseason is that all 204 players will receive additional salaries on top of their season contracts. This became the first basketball league in India to pay high salaries to all players.
Speaking of the same Sunny Bhandarkar, the CEO of the Elite Pro Basketball League said, “We want to have a preseason so the players can mingle with each other. Although most players either play together or against each other, we want to Set a precedent for how pro games are played. We will also give collegiate players the opportunity to go pro; each team will have 2 players.”
He further added: “The icing on the cake is the extra salary we are offering for the pre-season, not including their contracts. We will stop at nothing to make this a landmark league and hope it inspires the growth of basketball in the country .”
Sunil Rathee, who recently represented India, said: “A league like this is what Indian basketball needs, attractive salaries, good coaches and staff, a platform where people can showcase their talents. Basketball has a lot going on in India potential, and I hope that helps it grow.”
