Hyderabad: Emerging technology programs appear to be regaining the charm of an undergraduate engineering education as enrollment in the state has grown over the past three years.

Among convener places, engineering enrollment has increased by more than 13,500 since 2020. A total of 61,702 students enrolled in engineering students this year, compared with 57,545 in 2021 and 47,739 in 2020.

The surge in enrollment is mainly due to engineering schools offering courses in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), cybersecurity, robotics, IoT, data science, etc. in 2020, as there are many jobs for graduates in these fields provide opportunity. For example, nearly 90% of the 49,031 seats in computer science and IT-related fields (eg AI, ML) are filled in the 2022-23 school year.

However, some universities have started these emerging technology courses at the expense of traditional and core courses such as mechanical engineering and civil engineering. Most of the state’s colleges gave up seats in core branches and opted for courses in artificial intelligence, machine learning and cybersecurity.

Interestingly, the state has seen an uptick in admissions despite 71 engineering schools closing since 2015. In 2015, 248 engineering colleges filled 51,621 seats, and this year the number reached 61,702 among 177 colleges.

As the number of undergraduate engineering education enrollments increases year by year, vacancies gradually decrease. A total of 22,396 seats in 2020, 22,277 in 2021 and 17,644 in 2022 are vacant under the Convenor’s quota.
