Hyderabad: People always talk about having a double somewhere in the world, but there are some parts of the world where twins are as common as having one child for some reason.
Kodinhi village is one of those magical and mysterious places. Kodinhi, a small town in the Malappuram district of Kerala state in southern India, has risen to fame in recent years for unusual reasons, with an unusually high rate of twin births.
The town has more than 400 sets of twins, earning it the nickname “Twin Town”.
Kodinhi’s twinning was first discovered in the 40s, but it wasn’t until the late 90s that the number of twins started to increase. Since then, the number of twins in the town has steadily increased, according to residents.
There are many theories as to why Kodinhi has so many twins. Some believe this is due to the local diet, which is rich in yams and other foods that are said to increase the chances of conceiving twins. Others think it may have something to do with the town’s high levels of chemical pollution.
In recent years, Kodinhi has become a popular destination for researchers interested in studying the phenomenon of twinning. A team of scientists from the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad, India has also been studying the town’s twin population.
Researchers have been collecting blood samples, saliva and hair samples from the twins to study their DNA to better understand the genetic factors that lead to the twins’ high fertility rates.
Despite the scientific interest in the town’s twin population, Cordini’s life remained largely untouched. Known as the “Twin Cities,” the town hosts an annual festival to celebrate the twin residents. Twins from all over India come to Codini for this festival featuring traditional dance, music and food.
For the Kodinhi people, having twins is considered a special gift and the town is proud of its twin population. While the reasons for the town’s high twin birth rate remain a mystery, residents of Kodinhi continue to celebrate their unique status as the “Twin Cities”.
