As Dominique Toretto (Vin Diesel) says in all the Fast and Furious (FF) films, it’s about family. FF outing after FF proves that they’re mostly about how to drive a car and how to bash people, sometimes, with a few one-liners in between.
The FF franchise has such a huge fan base that they have had to update their products and create new spinoffs and theme park rides. It’s just that the movie would have been more effective if they’d paid more attention to the script than to the number of cars, bikes, or people being thrown around.
This time, the story tells about an event ten years ago. Father/drug lord Hernán Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida) tells his son Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) that they are placing the family name in “power epitome of “. Dominic Toretto / Dom (Vin Diesel) and Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) rob Hernan and he is killed.
Fast forward to the present. Cipher (Charlize Theron) arrives at Dom’s home injured and tells him Dante wants revenge. Will Dom succeed in saving his family? Director Louis Leterrier handed over control to the stunt team a little too soon. In fact, the film is more stunt-centric than its predecessors.
Surprisingly, Jason Momoa took credit for the big outing. He adds a sense of humor whenever he is on screen. He exudes malevolence and is perfect as a crime boss looking for revenge. Never before in the recent past has a villain added so much flesh and blood to a movie.
There aren’t many stories to tell in FF. You have fast cars, cops chasing Dom and his family, and a bad guy and his thugs chasing Dom and his family. It’s now routine since FF1.
With stars like Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, and Brie Larson, one would expect an outward intelligence. During this 140-minute outing, they have nothing to do. Just when you think this is the last part, you are told that this one will have a second part itself.
For Jason Momoa, this is a movie totally for FF fans. For those expecting any kind of storyline, don’t venture anywhere near.
