Paris: Defending champion Iga Swatek advanced to the last 16 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over 80th-ranked Wang Xinyu at the French Open on Saturday.
World No. 1 Swiatek of Poland knocked out Wang Yi in just 51 minutes in their first meeting at the tour level. Swatek had beaten Wang in two very close matches in their youth career, but this time, the top seed emerged victorious.
Swiatek, the 2020 and last year’s champion, has won each of her last ten fights at Roland Garros and is 24-2 in her career.
After winning the previous two games by the same scoreline of 6-4 and 6-0 this week, Swatek played with more ease against China’s No. 5 King Wang. Swatek goes into the next round with a comprehensive 19-game winning streak.
The 22-year-old Swatek, who never faced a break point on Saturday, took 21 winners to beat Wang’s three-pointer. Ms. Wang was making her first third-round match in a major, but she was 0-3 among the top 10 career players after a double bagel.
Top seed Swatek is still struggling to retain her No. 1 ranking in Paris. Swiatek needs to reach at least the quarter-finals to have a chance of retaining her top spot.
In the fourth round, Swiatek will face Saturday’s winner between 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu and former top-25 player Lesia Churenko.
