Hyderabad: The Fulbright-Nehru Scholarship and the Fulbright-Kalam Scholarship are two prestigious scholarships funded by the governments of the United States and India to support academic and cultural exchanges between India and the United States.
Scholarships are designed for highly motivated and outstanding Indians to pursue various degree and non-degree programs in the United States. Depending on the type of fellowship, the field of study can vary widely.
The Fulbright-Nehru Scholarship was established in 2008 and the Fulbright Kalam Scholarship was launched in 2011. Both scholarships are highly competitive and prestigious, offering scholars the opportunity to pursue their academic and professional goals while promoting intercultural understanding and goodwill between India and the United States.
Fulbright-Nehru Scholarship:
There are several awards under the Fulbright-Nehru program for students, scholars, teachers and professionals. Below is a brief overview of these awards:
Fulbright-Nehru Masters Scholarship: This is a degree-granting scholarship for those who have demonstrated leadership, have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree and have at least three years of professional work experience and are committed to returning home and doing it for them Contributing individuals to their communities. Scholarships are for one to two years.
Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Scholarships: Doctoral scholarships are exclusively for Indian scholars who are registered for PhD studies at Indian institutions. They have a term of six to nine months.
Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowships: Postdoctoral fellowships are designed for Indian teachers and researchers who are in the early stages of their research careers in India. This fellowship offers talented teachers and researchers the opportunity to strengthen their research capabilities. Fellows will have access to some of the best resources in their field of study. They will also help build long-term relationships with U.S. teachers and institutions. They last from 8 to 24 months.
Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowships: This fellowship offers Indian teachers, researchers and professionals the opportunity to teach, conduct research, or conduct a combination of teaching and research at US institutions.
Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Seminar: The two-week course provides Indian college and university administrators with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the US higher education system.
UMass Amherst Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Chair: This program is designed for Indian scholars who are employed in India to conduct research and teaching at UMass Amherst. This scholarship is offered jointly by the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the American-Indian Educational Foundation. The Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Chair for the 2024-2025 academic year at UMass Amherst will be offered in the area of public policy.
Emory University Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Chair Program: This program is designed for Indian scholars employed in India to conduct research and teach at the main campus of Emory University in Atlanta. Scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year will be offered to scholars engaged in globally integrated multidisciplinary approaches.
