However, with well-paced storytelling, an expansion of the game’s setting (exploring the origins of the virus), and the development of relevant protagonists, the show’s creators have managed to capture the magic and emotional connection that millions of players experience when faced with clickers . One by one the carriages succumbed to the inevitable, gravity overwhelmed the train’s various fasteners. In the angst and suspense of this moment, I couldn’t help noticing how eerily similar this scene was to the one in Uncharted 2, with Nathan Drake escaping a similar predicament in the Himalayas.
Closer to home, the visual aesthetic of Shah Rukh Khan in “Patan” is very similar to Keanu Reeves’ character in “Cyberpunk 2077”, and even the montage in the 2019 movie “War” is similar to that of “Tom Khan”. Games like Lancey’s Ghost Recon are similar.
Culturally, we’ve reached a point where games and other cinematic forms can speak equally in terms of storytelling and ability to capture rich detail. The recently released Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse exemplifies how games, movies, and animation can come together to deliver a truly unique experience, incorporating ideas like variable frame rates.
On the other hand, in the world of filmmaking, I highly recommend watching the fifth episode of the third season of The Witcher. It shows how layer-by-layer details can be revealed using classic film techniques such as flashbacks and flash-forwards, which found a good way to adapt to the depth of an RPG, where it is revealed through hundreds of hours of sustained engagement. Dig for legends.
The conception and narrative of stories is changing, and I firmly believe that The Last of Us is the first sign that video games provide a unique service to the creative process. It’s been exciting to witness this evolution and to see that we’re exploring new avenues for game production that go beyond a single pursuit of photorealism, technological advancement, visual fidelity, and pixel count.
