Hyderabad: First, women outpaced men in degree admissions for the 2022-23 academic year, occupying 52.50% of seats. Statistics from Telangana Degree Online Services (DOST) for 2022 show that more than 100,000 women are enrolled in various courses including BCom, BSc and BA.
Although the total number of admissions recorded through DOST was 1,90,578, 1,00044 (52.50%) of them were females and 90,534 (47.50%) were males.
According to the academician, the number of women studying for degree programmes is increasing year by year. However, this year, it has surpassed men.
So far, this trend has also been seen in PG admissions. In the last academic year, 16,192 (70%) females and 6,663 males were enrolled in PG courses. This year, of the 12,800 candidates admitted in the first phase for their confirmed seats in the 2022 Common Postgraduate Entrance Examination (CPGET), 70 per cent were women.
“The awareness among parents to send their daughters to higher education has increased a lot recently.
Also, boarding education institutions have made a lot of progress in the state and everyone has an equal opportunity to pursue higher education in the state,” said Prof R Limbadri, Chairman, Higher Education Commission, Telangana.
Looking at the degree enrollment situation, business continues to be the first choice for undergraduate students, accounting for 40.46% of the total enrollment. BCom recorded 77,107 admissions which actually exceeded the total number of engineering admissions registered under the convenor quota this year which was 61,702.
BSc Life Sciences is the second most popular course at undergraduate level with 42,056 admissions. Interestingly, 31,667 women took the BSc Life Sciences course compared to 10,389 men.
