New Delhi: The government on Tuesday extended the deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar by three months to June 30 to enable people to comply with the mandatory income tax rules.
Deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar is March 31. According to the Income Tax Department, failure to link these two unique identities will invalidate the unlinked PAN.
Various parties, including political parties, have called for more time for people to link their PAN (Permanent Account Number) with their unique 12-digit identification number, Aadhaar.
“To give taxpayers more time, the date to connect PAN and Aadhaar has been extended until June 30, 2023 so that people can inform the prescribed Aadhaar-PAN connection authority of their Aadhaar without being affected,” the finance ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
Earlier, the government had also extended the deadline several times.
The government has imposed a fee of Rs 500 for linking PAN to Aadhaar from April 1, 2022, which was later increased to Rs 1,000 from July 1, 2022.
So far, more than 510 million PANs have been linked to Aadhaar.
As per the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961, everyone who has been granted a PAN on 1st July 2017 and is eligible for an Aadhaar number has to inform the designated agency of his Aadhaar on or before 31st March, 2023, Payment Regulations cost of.
Failure to do so will have certain repercussions under the Act from April 1, 2023.
“In order to link PAN and Aadhaar, the date for notification of Aadhaar to designated bodies has now been extended to June 30, 2023,” the statement said.
Taxpayers who fail to notify their Aadhaar will have their PAN invalidated from 1 July 2023.
Once the PAN expires, the relevant taxpayer will not be able to claim tax refund or interest. Also, TDS and TCS will be deducted/charged from it at a higher rate.
“After paying a fee of Rs 1,000, Aadhaar notifies the prescribed agencies that the PAN can operate again within 30 days,” the ministry said.
Those exempted from the PAN-Aadhaar link will not face lawsuits.
