Hyderabad: Ongoing attempts at modernizing healthcare infrastructure, decentralizing primary healthcare through Basthi and Palle Dawakhanas, and improving bedside facilities for patients in government hospitals appear to be a major attraction as the number of outpatient, inpatient ward visits and surgeries in Telangan In government hospitals in Nabang, it has reached an all-time high.
For the past 18 months or so, the government has not been financially distressed by taking loans at hand from dubious private lenders just to provide health care in upper-middle-class nursing homes, clinics, and private hospitals with 20 to 35 beds, Hospitals are fast becoming the first choice for the poor in Telangana.
All government hospitals have seen a significant increase in performing major and minor surgeries this year. Public healthcare institutions in Telangana have also recorded a significant increase in patient visits at all levels of the healthcare system, both inpatient and outpatient. A total of nearly 1.7 million patients from Telangana used inpatient facilities by 2022, compared to 1.4 million patients who were inpatients in government hospitals in 2021.
Likewise, patient inflow in the OP segment surged to 4.9 million in 2022 compared to 4.23 billion in 2021. A record 304,000 major and minor surgeries will be performed in government hospitals in 2022, compared with about 250,000 in 2021.
The proportion of pregnant women who prefer to go to public hospitals has also increased and is now between 60% and 63%. Previously, the proportion of pregnant women using healthcare facilities in government hospitals used to be between 35% and 40%. Senior public health officials closely involved in tracking such developments noted that the state government’s consistent efforts to ensure appropriate distribution of funds to the health sector played a major role in the increased patient influx.
With a per capita allocation of Rs 3,532 in the healthcare sector, the third highest in the country, a staggering Rs 12,364 crore has been allocated to the health sector in this year’s budget.
