Focus on sanitation, adoption of newer practices, Basti Dawakhanas, and handover of 2BHKs, civic bodies keep the momentum going as the year draws to a close

Hyderabad: From improving road infrastructure to increasing green coverage in the city to taking steps to preserve and restore heritage, the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is busy in 2022 with various initiatives.
There is also a focus on sanitation, which ranges from adopting newer practices such as secondary collection and transfer points to promoting efficient collection and disposal of construction waste. Then, more projects were developed to address the problems of the urban poor.
For GHMC, 2022 began with the inauguration of the Shaikpet Interchange on January 1 by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao under the Telangana government’s ambitious Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP).
The momentum was maintained as nine SRDP projects including flyovers, underpasses, roads under bridges (RoB) and others were made available to the people this year.
“As more and more people choose Hyderabad over other cities to live and invest in, GHMC is developing infrastructure that not only meets current needs but also plans and works for future needs,” Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi said.
Under the state government’s flagship program ‘Telangana Ku Haritha Haram (TKHH)’, GHMC is prioritizing greening and infrastructure development, with a target of planting 12 million tree saplings in its jurisdiction by 2022, and green work is underway.
One of the biggest changes in the lives of the poor this year has been the delivery of brand new 2BHK houses built under the state government’s Dignity Housing scheme by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao.
Families who have lived for decades in squalid slums with little to no facilities are getting a fresh start in 2022, including Bandamaisamma 2BHK Housing Colony in Bansilalpet, Indira Nagar Dignity Housing Colony in Khairatabad and Old Marredpally 2BHK Dignity Housing Colony etc.
Meanwhile, to empower women from the economically weaker sectors (EWS) to become self-reliant, civic agencies partnered with banks to help 8,973 self-help groups (SHGs) secure 467.16 crore loan.
With the construction of more Basti Dawakhanas, the state government continues to strive to provide better primary healthcare services to slum dwellers and the poor.
Skills upgrading training, issuing identity cards and granting loan lines to street vendors, and building multipurpose halls are some of the other measures.
