Hyderabad: To educate slum and rural girls about menstrual health and hygiene management, the nonprofit Green Pencil Foundation organized an event in the city on Sunday called “Pride Time.” Around a hundred girls and women from the slums of Attapur took part in the event.
A wide range of topics – including an introduction to the female reproductive system, the menstrual cycle, the importance of menstrual health and hygiene, what to eat during the menstrual cycle, menstruation and what to do during it – are discussed and explained to women. Girls and women who participated in this event.
In addition to this, the girls were also interacted with about the challenges they face in managing their menstrual hygiene. Sanitary napkin use and cleaning and disposal techniques have been taught.
Talking about the need for menstrual hygiene, Trisha Panjala, city director of the Green Pencil Foundation, said, “Period hygiene management should be part of the school curriculum for students aged 9 and up so that they can cope with periods with ease and manage their own methods better.” She added , the NGO also plans to further carry out several such activities in government schools and slum areas of the city.
