136 million people in the country may be prediabetic, study finds
Hyderabad: A recent India-specific collaborative study/survey by researchers from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Diabetes Institute Madras has highlighted the health hazards of diabetes and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and prediabetes to people The population of India in the next few years has attracted everyone’s attention.

Interestingly, the study found that 136 million people in the country may be prediabetic, meaning that without rapid intervention at the wider public health level, these people could transition to diabetes.
The study has attracted widespread attention because the researchers present a shocking picture. “While the diabetes epidemic is stabilizing in the more developed states of the country, it is still increasing in most other states. Therefore, this has serious national implications and urgent country-specific policies and interventions are needed to contain the Rapidly rising prevalence of metabolic noncommunicable diseases,” said the study’s researchers.
A sizeable population of India is at risk of cardiovascular disease and other long-term organ complications due to metabolic non-communicable diseases. “Metabolic noncommunicable diseases are likely to pose a major public health challenge in the near future. There is also evidence that noncommunicable diseases are spreading to rural areas, where the health infrastructure needed to effectively diagnose and manage these diseases is lacking. This requires urgent action at the government level to prevent and manage NCDs by strengthening public healthcare systems and re-prioritizing healthcare delivery,” the researchers said.
Known as the ICMR-INDIAB-17 Population-Based Survey, the study involved collecting data for 2008 and using existing national surveys, including the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), to extrapolate the data for 2021.
The study reiterated the significant burden of noncommunicable diseases in India and indicated that the prevalence of other cardiometabolic risk factors such as obesity, hypertension and dyslipidemia was generally higher across the country, especially in urban areas.
“Therefore, the focus should be on implementing interventions to minimize the progression of prediabetes to diabetes in states where the diabetes epidemic has not yet peaked, and providing optimal care to ensure comprehensive risk factor reduction in people with diabetes to prevent complications of those states where the outbreak has stabilized,” the researchers said.
