Health and Technology: Carbon Materials Crucial for Medical Technology, Devices

It is used to manufacture equipment and different healthcare applications

Carbon is the most basic element for all life forms on Earth! While many of us have learned a lot in school about the importance of carbon, not much is known about its critical role in medical technology and the manufacture of medical devices.

Due to its ability to remain stable and form bonds with different kinds of elements, carbon has become an important part of medical device manufacturing over the past few years. It is increasingly used as a material in the manufacture of medical devices and different healthcare applications.

Carbon as a material has rapidly begun to replace traditional metals such as iron, alloys, iron, silicon, titanium, etc. in the past few years. In a paper on the use of carbon to make microneedles published in the journal Nature Science, researchers led by Dr Tarun Kanti Bhattacharyya from IIT Kharagpur said: “As a major advantage of carbon over silicon or other materials, carbon exists Among various allotropes with unique physicochemical properties, this allows researchers to tailor their properties for unique applications.”

In the same paper, IIT-Kharagpur researchers, who collaborated with ICMR to design and develop carbon-based microneedles, said: “Since carbon is an essential element of all life forms and has been successfully used as a material for medical applications, it is studied for drug delivery applications. Carbon is also desirable.”

In fact, the medical device industry has been utilizing carbon to manufacture a large number of medical devices. Carbon has been used to make orthopedic devices, and carbon fibers and composites are used in orthopedic surgery, surgical instruments, artificial heart valves, and even in cancer treatment.

carbon fiber:

Over the past few years, carbon fiber has found use in almost every type of application in several fields. Carbon fiber is used to make jewelry, mobile phones, and even life-saving implantable medical devices.

The use of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) in medical technology is increasing rapidly. CFRP’s high chemical resistance, light weight, and ease of sterilization make it a favorite of healthcare professionals. As a result, CFRP, which was early used in the aerospace and automotive industries, is now increasingly used in the medical field and is rapidly replacing traditional metal-based medical implants.

What is carbon fiber?

Carbon fiber is a polymer (also known as graphite fiber) and is an extremely strong and lightweight material. Carbon fiber is five times stronger and twice as stiff as steel, yet lighter than steel, making it ideal for manufacturing medical devices. From operating room tables, components for orthopedic implants, X-ray machine components and more, carbon is increasingly used to make life-saving medical devices.

Composite carbon materials are biologically inert, which makes them ideal for surgical devices. Carbon is also radiolucent (transparent to radiation), making it an ideal material for imaging devices, medical scanners, and X-ray imaging applications.

Carbon fibers are not affected by radiation, so they can be safely used to make vital medical components used in implants, medical wheelchair components, prosthetics, implantable devices, and more.
