Hyderabad: To ensure that commuters enjoy smooth and accident-free travel on city roads, the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has approved 7,513 road-related works under its jurisdiction in the fiscal year 2022-23 at a cost of Rs 1,947.24 crore.
Of the 7,513 approved road-related works, GHMC has so far successfully completed 2,219 projects costing Rs 458.35 crore while the remaining 5,294 projects costing Rs 1,488.89 crore are in various stages of completion.
The total length of roads maintained by GHMC is 9,013 km, of which 2,846 km are BT roads and 6,167 km are cement concrete (CC) roads.
Out of the total road length restricted by GHMC, 811.96 km is the length of major roads (three-lane and above width), and to provide better travel experience on these roads, the Telangana government has imposed an administrative penalty of Rs 1,839 crore Used for maintenance and activation of the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Program (CRMP).
Under the plan, the CRMP agency is obliged to fully maintain and maintain the entire main road in a condition suitable for traffic within five years. The CRMP agency has resurfaced over 690 kilometers of the 811.96 kilometers main road network. The maintenance of the median, sanitation, landscaping development, and curb painting of major roads are also the responsibility of the CRMP agency under the contract, the senior GHMC official said.
At the same time, in order to avoid rainwater retention and ensure the longevity of the roads that frequently flood during downpours, GHMC decided to lay vacuum dewatered cement concrete (VDCC) roads instead of ordinary asphalt roads. GHMC has proposed a 146km Vacuum Dewatered Cement Concrete (VDCC) project at an expenditure of Rs 158.67 crore in the current financial year and works are currently underway at various locations. These roads are paved in colonies and sections with relatively little traffic compared to main roads.
