Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) will double the capacity of its sewage treatment plants as the Ministry of Municipal Management and Urban Development (MA&UD) plans to make Hyderabad the first city in the country to treat 100% of the sewage produced (STP) Around Hussain Sagar Lake.

As part of the exercise, HMDA is expanding and upgrading the existing 5 MLD, 20 MLD and 30 MLD capacity STP around Hussain Sagar Lake to 10 MLD, 40 MLD and 60 MLD capacity.

This environmental protection measure has been tendered and the agency that will be awarded the contract will be responsible for the tertiary treatment, including 20 years of operations and maintenance (O&M) around Lake Hussain Sagar, including associated infrastructure on the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). “Increasing the capacity of the STP will have a huge impact on the quality of water in Hussain Sagar by drastically reducing water pollution. With the rapid development of the city and considering the increase in population density, a long-term strategy is to build the required infrastructure to handle incoming More water for Hussein Sagar,” the HMDA official said.

Currently, sewage containing sewage is discharged from Banjara Nala, Picket Nala, Balkapur Nala and Kukatpally Nala to Hussain Sagar Lake, causing water pollution in Hussain Sagar. “Once the capacity of the STPs increases, they will also protect the lakes from pollution in the future. The water treated by the sewage treatment plant will be used for non-domestic uses and the remaining water will be discharged into the Musi River,” the HMDA official said.

To further decentralize sewage treatment in the city, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is building 17 sewage treatment plants (STPs) along the Musi River and the Kucatpalinara catchment.

All these initiatives were adopted under the Sewage Improvement Project and Sewage Treatment Master Plan for the Hyderabad Urban Cluster Area as part of the development of the Hussain Sagar catchment area. At present, the city produces 1950MLD of sewage every day, of which 772MLD is discharged into the water body after being treated by the sewage treatment plant. As the proposed 17 new STPs have a capacity of 376.5 MLD at a cost of Rs 1,280.87 crore and more STPs will be constructed in phases, Hyderabad will be the first city to treat 100% of the sewage generated.
