Hyderabad: In another notable achievement, the organ transplant team of the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) at a government hospital in Telangana has successfully performed 50 kidney transplants, of which 28 were living related and 22 Organs come from brain-dead deceased donors, as short as four months.
The 50 kidney transplants were performed at NIMS free of charge for needy patients under the state-run Aarogyasri health insurance scheme. Chronic kidney transplant patients at NIMS receive nearly Rs 1.5 lakh worth of healthcare services free of charge through the Aarogyasri insurance scheme.
Over the past year or so, the Telangana state government has launched a concerted effort to encourage organ transplants at tertiary government hospitals in Hyderabad, including Gandhi Hospital, OGH and NIMS. In addition to kidneys, state-run teaching hospitals have stepped up efforts to declare brain death, and carried out heart, liver, skin, lung and other organ transplants.
State Health Minister T Harish Rao said, “I congratulate NIMS Hospital for successfully performing 50 kidney transplants in the first 4 months of this year. Under the leadership of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, the Telangana government is now delivering value to organ transplant patients through Aarogyasri 1.5 lakh free medical expenses”.
Since statehood in 2014, NIMS hospitals have performed 862 kidney transplants, 522 of which were to relatives and 340 through cadaveric organ donation. Since 2015, Nimes Hospital has performed an average of at least 100 kidney transplants per year.
Last year, NIMS surgeons performed 93 kidney transplants, and the transplant team has performed 50 kidney transplants in the first four months of this year. Organ transplants from deceased donors are performed through the Jeevandan Organ Donation Initiative.
“In the next few months, the Organ Transplant Center at Gandhi Hospital, which is being developed at a cost of Rs 350 crore, will be ready and we will be able to further enhance high-end organ transplant operations at government hospitals,” said Harish Rai.
The Urology team at NIMS is headed by Professor and Head Dr Rahul Devraj and the team includes Prof Dr Ch Ram Reddy, Dr S Vidyasagar, Dr G Ramachandraiah, Dr GV Charan Kumar, Dr Dheeraj, Dr Arun Kumar, Dr Sunil, Dr Vinay, Dr. Vishnu et al.
