Hyderabad: Epilepsy specialists and team of epilepsy specialists from Hyderabad successfully diagnosed and treated a 3 year old child who had been experiencing abnormal laughing seizures (gel seizures) for over a year.
The surgery, performed for the first time in Hyderabad, brings hope to children whose smiles are abnormal due to hypothalamic hamartoma. Hypothalamic hamartoma is a rare brain disorder that affects the hypothalamus, an important part of the brain responsible for a variety of physiological functions.
One of the distressing symptoms is involuntary facial movements, often manifested as an abnormal smile. Desperate for a solution, the parents of their child turned to the team at AIG Hospital’s Department of Neuroscience.
The child was successfully diagnosed and treated by a team of Epilepsy Specialists Dr Nikith Milind Shaw and Dr Prashanthi Aripirala at Rainbow Hospital and Dr Raghu Samala, Senior Epilepsy Surgeon at AIG Hospital, Hyderabad.
After careful evaluation by the epilepsy surgical team, it was determined that the child would benefit greatly from surgical intervention. The team at AIG Hospital decided to use groundbreaking robotic minimally invasive surgery.
Dr Raghu Samala said: “This breakthrough in surgical technology allows us to provide a better quality of life for children with hypothalamic hamartomas. By employing a robotic approach, we can achieve superior surgical outcomes while Risks associated with traditional open surgery. This is a game changer for both patients and healthcare professionals.”
The neurosurgical team led by Dr. Subodh Raju and Dr. Raghu Samala at AIG Hospital was closely involved throughout the procedure.
