Hyderabad: Age is just a number if one is passionate about learning.
This is a man in his septuagenarian who has excelled in his intermediate public examinations and is seeking entry to a degree course. K Nag Shetty is 74 years old and wants to study for a BA in History, Political Science and Economics.
Shetty, a resident of Shivaji Nagar in Uppuguda, served in the Indian Army and fought in the 1971 India-Pakistan war in the Kargil area. After 21.5 years of service, he retired as a junior commissioner and spent another 21 years as a security guard for private companies.
Born in 1949, Shetty passed SSLC (Grade X) in Kannada but was unable to pursue higher education due to family financial situation. During his job search, he attended a recruiting rally and was offered a job.
After decades of cultivating his passion, he decided to further his education and was admitted to the Intermediate of Gokul Intermediate College, IS Sadan. He has special permission from the Board of Secondary Education to sit for the exam as an official candidate.
Shetty achieved a high score of 76.04% in the Intermediate exam of the CEC group. “I was knowledgeable but I was not educated enough. So, I applied for Intermediate. I prepared hard and received tuition from my college teacher Ms. Bhagarvi and passed the exam,” Shetty told ‘Telangana today‘.
The age limit for admission to a degree through DOST is 1966 but he was born in 1949. “I have submitted a statement to the Telangana state higher education officials and they have responded positively and assured me that the necessary changes will be made to the date of birth in the DOST portal,” Shetty added.
