Hyderabad: To make commuting along the city flyover enjoyable and to further enhance the city’s aesthetics, the Highderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is making use of the flyover’s components and the space below it.
As part of this work, vertical gardens are being developed on the pillars of the overpass, the space below is being developed as a lung space, while the walls, ramps and other components of the overpass are being painted to make it attractive.
Painting work is in progress for the flyover and Biodiversity Flyover near the Hitec City MMTS station, while the development of a vertical garden for the Biodiversity Flyover is underway.
“The expanded Chandrayangutta interchange, the old Chandrayangutta interchange and the Kothaguda interchange under construction, as well as other Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) projects, will have vertical gardens and work on greening them will begin this month,” the GHMC official said.
Whenever possible, artistic depictions and paintings will adorn the overpass based on the importance of the place and murals showing the rich heritage and culture of Hyderabad, Telangana and India, according to officials. One such example is the Biodiversity Flyover, which features paintings of animals and greenery on its columns, depicting the theme of biodiversity.
The artwork is based on water ladders, coloured lighting and other landscaping works installed under the city’s overpass. While continuing to create green spaces along the city’s flyovers, GHMC’s Urban Biodiversity Wing is working to develop them into small lung spaces with sidewalks.
While the lung space under the Shaikpet overpass is already open to people, the area under the overpass near Kamineni Hospital, LB Nagar is currently under development. Meanwhile, at selected sites, plans are underway to develop the space below the sky bridge as a rest area for pedestrians and passersby.
“In addition to developing greenery under the overpass, the company will build passages, install benches, arrange drinking water, and provide tea, coffee and snacks through the installation of food kiosks on selected overpasses,” said a GHMC official.
