Hyderabad: London Bridge in Hyderabad! Many people may not have heard of it, but there is a small bridge called “London Bridge” in Hafiznagar in the old city of Yakutpura.
The small bridge across Nala is a famous structure in these parts of the city. Many families associate their residential addresses with the bridge. Ask anyone in Pula, Yakutip about London Bridge and they will direct you to the site.
There is also an interesting story about how the bridge got its name. During the 2020 floods, several small bridges connecting the residential areas of Chandrayangutta, Lalithabagh, Chatrinaka, Yakutpura, Dabeerpura and Azampura were damaged or washed away.
“In Hafiznagar, Pula, Yakut, there are two bridges. One is FoB and the other is a small bridge for two-wheelers. Officials asked locals about this when preparing the budget for reconstruction and repairs. The name of the bridge was discussed by the locals and named as “London Bridge”. Hence, the bridge got its name,” said Mohd Wasayuddin of Rein Bazaar GHMC.
Local resident Mohd Baqer, 60, avid shoemaker, tells another story. “Young people used to hang out by the bridge until late at night. When their friends asked where they were, they would say, ‘We’re at London Bridge’. What started as an amusing reference turned into the bridge’s name,” he recalled.
Farzana Begum said whenever relatives, acquaintances or delivery people asked for a residential address, they were told to ask for “London Bridge”. “It’s a popular landmark reference now,” she said.
GHMC recently started work on a mural on the bridge retaining wall. Interestingly, at the request of the locals, they painted a mural of London Bridge all over the retaining wall.
