Hyderabad: Construction of the Mehdipatnam pedestrian bridge at a cost of Rs 329.7 crore by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is fast underway.

Works related to the construction of the pedestrian-friendly facility have been slowed down by land acquisition issues but are picking up pace after a recent meeting between Municipal Management and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister KT Rama Rao and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, HMDA officials said.

Construction of pedestrian facilities has been hampered by delays in the acquisition of land for the centre. Recently, the Minister of MA&UD asked the Center to expedite the transfer of about 160 acres of defense land to the Telangana government to facilitate the development of public infrastructure, which also included the acquisition of half an acre of land for the development of the skywalk in Mehidipatnam.

“Once the land acquisition is complete, the project will be ready within six months. Earlier, when the works were delayed, the minister met the commander of the Dakshin Bharat A Arun area, and the slow work was accelerated,” one said an HMDA official.

Once ready, pedestrian bridges will be of great help to many people, allowing them to travel safely on foot without having to wade through traffic. The pedestrian bridge is adjacent to the PV Narasimha Rao highway, with defense land on one side and commercial buildings on the other.

The gorgeous skywalk features 13 lifts and two intermediate tunnel walks, stretching over 390 metres. It has five entrances at Rythu Bazar, Defense Compound Wall, within the bus staging area (Mehdipatnam), near Asif Nagar Police Station and Raymond Showroom (Gudimalkapur Junction). The skywalk also has 21,061.42 square feet of commercial space, which will be used to set up coffee shops, vacation corners, casual snacks, and more.
