Hyderabad: Another project aimed at addressing traffic issues in Hyderabad’s busy IT corridors and business districts has begun to take shape, with construction of the six-lane, dual-way Gachibowli-Kondapur Interchange progressing apace.
The flyover at the secondary junction at Gachibowli junction towards the Outer Ring Road (ORR) is estimated to cost Rs 1.78 billion. It was constructed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) under the Telangana government’s ambitious Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP). The flyover is 1.2 kilometers long and 24 meters wide, and the benefits of this SRDP project include easing traffic at Gachibowli Junction and better connecting Hitec City and the financial district.
According to GHMC data, in Gachibowli Junction, the peak hour traffic volume in 2019 was 9,806 passenger car units (PCU) per hour and the peak hour traffic volume in 2036 is expected to be 17,711 PCU per hour. The bridge foundation related works are currently in progress. “Works started on March 1 and we planned to complete the construction of the flyover by February 28, 2024. But it was delayed by two months due to land acquisition issues,” the GHMC official said.
To simplify current traffic and meet future needs, the area has recently provided the four-lane two-way Shilpa Layout Interchange and the Kothaguda Interchange. The Shilpa Layout flyover eases traffic at the Gachibowli Junction for motorists coming from the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and entering the western part of the city.
Likewise, the multi-storey flyover at Botanic Gardens Junction, passing through Kothaguda and Kondapur Junction, has been able to ease the traffic at Botanic Gardens Junction and also solve the traffic problem at Kondapur Junction.
