Hyderabad: Four police officers, including an inspector, were injured when a group of goldsmiths attacked in Charminar on Sunday night. All officers working at Mailardevpally Police Station went to a building on Sardar Mahal Road in civilian clothes as part of an investigation into an alleged gold smuggling case.
Inspector Rajendra Goud entered the building along with four officers and three other civilians. “The team caught Owais, an individual, in the building when some of his colleagues raised the alarm. Residents in the building immediately gathered and attacked the police team, injuring the inspector and three other officers,” ACP Shaik Jahangeer said.
After the attack, the police were rushed to Osmania General Hospital and a private hospital for treatment.
The police team initially entered the building without identifying themselves and roughed up Owais after arresting him, the source said. Hader and Sohail, who live in the same building and work as goldsmiths, raised the alarm when a police team tried to evacuate the premises after a police team allegedly collected gold from lockers.
Soon the occupants of the aforementioned building and neighbors who were mainly goldsmiths assembled and, assuming the police were thieves, attacked them. A number of building occupants were also injured and were transferred to OGH, where they were given first aid.
Meanwhile, police have arrested seven people for assaulting police officers and are questioning them at Moharpura police station. They all told the police they thought they were thieves and attacked them.
