Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police has urged government departments to be mindful of cyber hygiene and take cybersecurity measures so as not to be caught by fraudsters.
The advisory follows cases where databases of public sector enterprises (PSUs) and some government agencies have been targeted by fraudsters resulting in financial or data loss.
Detective Department Police Joint Commissioner Dr Gajarao Bhupal said government departments and other agencies have been asked to maintain basic cyber hygiene.
“Employees should know the basics, like not clicking on emails from unknown sources, and distinguishing phishing emails from regular emails. All organizations should take basic security measures, including cybersecurity software, to prevent hacking,” he said.
In offices with financial transactions or security-related issues, we require them to have cybersecurity teams to stop cyber or ransomware attacks.
“Especially PSU banks, government treasury, government agencies and departments that handle money need to have more advanced cyber security systems. Awareness raising is being coordinated with other concerned agencies,” another official said.
Police cited several examples, including the Mahesh Bank case, in which scammers sent phishing emails and tricked staff into opening them. Through the gateway, the gang successfully entered the server to conduct transactions and embezzle funds.
“Police spent close to Rs. 5.8 million on investigating the case. Imagine how much public money was spent due to negligence,” the senior official said.
