Hyderabad: As temperatures drop and another cold snap hits Hyderabad, the homeless and vulnerable are the most affected. With the nighttime and early morning weather changing quite a bit these days, sidewalk residents are starting to face difficulties.
Helping them are volunteer groups and Good Samaritans who are stepping up to help the homeless and vulnerable by distributing blankets and warm clothing. Donations have been accelerated as weather forecasts point to further drops in temperatures in the coming days.
Under the banner of Helping Humanity Hyderabad, city lawyer Mohd Abdul Yousuf has launched a winter relief campaign. This year, he and his team collected about 600 blankets and 400 sweaters from donors across the city and distributed them to those in need.
“It’s hard for the poor to survive the winter because they can’t afford warm clothes. If we all decide to donate our unused winter clothes, there’s a lot that can be done to alleviate their suffering,” Youssef said, adding that every winter There will be a drive on Saturday night from 9.30pm to 11.30pm.
Another NGO in the city, the Youngistaan Foundation, has been distributing warm clothes and blankets at government-run overnight shelters. “Some of the people living in these shelters are partially homeless. They work as day wagers during the day and spend the night in the shelters at night. We have been distributing warm clothing in Yousufguda, Begumpet and Nampally,” said a representative of the organization.
Apart from NGOs who hold similar events every year, students and housing communities have also been collecting and distributing clothes. People can contact Helping Humans Hyderabad at 9182188109 to donate warm clothing.
