Hyderabad: As part of its efforts to promote non-motorized transportation (NMT), GHMC is proposing bike lanes in various parts of the city. Three of the facilities will be inaugurated in September and three more will open in November.
The three cycling facilities that will open in September include a track that will appear on the Narsapur X road – Balanagar – Y Junction- JNTU – Hydernagar stretch and another that will pass through IDL Lake -NH 65 – JNTU – Moosapet (near Rainbow Vistas, gate controlled community housing). The third track will extend from the IDL junction to the JNTU junction. All proposed cycling facilities are located in the Kukatpally area.
Meanwhile, a cycle lane will be developed in Secunderabad district from Tarnaka to Mettuguda metro station on both sides of the road.
In addition to these tracks north and east of the city, GHMC on the west side of the city is developing a track from Bio Diversity Junction to Leather Park, and another track from Rolling Hills to AIG Hospitals, and work is currently underway. The two tracks are planned to be developed in the Serilingampally area by November.
Together with GHMC, HMDA is also developing a cycle path from Khajaguda Cross Road to Nanakramguda Rotary. The infrastructure for these facilities is all geared towards amateur cyclists and fitness enthusiasts and will be a mix of permanent and temporary bike lanes.
Temporary bike lanes will be developed where permanent bike lanes cannot be built, and on all upcoming bike lanes, safety measures will be in place to separate cyclists from traffic, according to GHMC officials.
On the temporary track, lanes would be opened for cyclists and bollards would be placed to prevent other vehicles from entering the track, according to the proposal. However, the permanent tracks will be flanked by concrete barriers and curbs to keep cyclists away from traffic.
