ICMR will soon publish its findings on sudden death and Covid vaccines

New Delhi: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said the results of its study on heart attacks in young people and a possible link between heart attacks and Covid-19 vaccines will be published in the coming days.

ICMR Director General (DG) Rajiv Bahl told IANS, “We are looking at sudden death. There are four studies going on. We will have the results soon and let everyone know, and we will continue to look at whether the number of deaths is increasing from different angles.”

“We’re trying to figure out what the underlying causes are,” he said, adding that ICMR is awaiting peer review of the findings before making a public assessment.

Those who died were considered cases and those who survived were considered controls, Bahl added.

“There’s a design called a case-control study. In case-control, whether the death is due to a heart attack. Among all these factors, age, incidence, habits and how they got Covid, whether it was severe Covid, whether they took The Covid vaccine, as well as many other factors are being seen,” the director-general said.

He added that the first study was done on patients with severe Covid-19.

“When they came home from the hospital, they were followed for over a year. Few of them died, while many survived. Of the 14,000 people who were followed, 600 died. We’re doing the analysis now, and we’ve gone to Ask their relatives for more findings,” he said.

Bahl added: “For those who did not die, they compared and analyzed. So, a study has been done. This report will be the first to appear.”

He further said that the second study was on sudden deaths reported by multiple centers in India.Similarly, a third study was
Cardiovascular or any other thromboembolic event, they didn’t die but faced problems. While the fourth study looked at the causes of death or sudden death, what is now and what was before.

He added that, prospectively, AIIMS has occurred with deaths between the ages of 18-45 and autopsies are being performed on them to ascertain the cause of death. This will be compared to pre-Covid-19 causes of death in 2018-19.

“We will analyze whether this has changed, or whether it is the same as before. That will let us know why this is the case. So let’s finish the research,” said the ICMR director-general.

He also added that ICMR had a large sample size.

“Because of the small sample size, we can’t say anything with confidence,” he said, adding that a study had already been done and the findings are currently being reviewed.

“Once the process is complete, we will publish the findings,” Bahl added.
