The IMD said in a statement that the deep depression intensified into Cyclone Biparjoy over the east-central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea.

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned on Tuesday that a deep low in the southeastern Arabian Sea has intensified into a cyclonic storm.
It said the cyclonic storm was named Cyclone Biparjoy, a name given by Bangladesh.
“The deep depression intensified into cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ (pronounced ‘Biporjoy’) over the east-central and adjacent southeast Arabian Sea,” the IMD said in a statement.
“Over the past 6 hours, a deep depression over the southeast and adjacent central-eastern Arabian Sea has moved northward at 4 km/h, intensified into cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’, and is located today at 1730 hours IST (5:30 p.m. Central location on June 6, 2023, in the East Central near latitude 12.1 degrees north and longitude 66 degrees east and southeast of the adjoining Arabian Sea, approximately 920 kilometers southwest of Goa, 1,050 kilometers southwest of Mumbai, southwest of Porbandar 1,130 km south of Karachi, 1,430 km south of Porbandar,” the statement read.
“Over the next 24 hours, it is likely to move northwards and intensify gradually, becoming a severe cyclonic storm in the central-eastern Arabian Sea,” it added.
