Washington: An Indian-American teenager is believed to have jumped to his death from San Francisco’s famous Golden Gate Bridge, according to his parents and U.S. Coast Guard officials.
The 16-year-old boy’s bicycle, phone and bag were found on the bridge. The 12th grader is believed to have jumped off the bridge at about 4.58pm, they said.
The Coast Guard said it launched a two-hour search and rescue operation after confirming they saw “a person” jumping off the bridge.
They said there was little reason to believe the boy was still alive.
Community leader Ajay Jain Bhutoria said it was the fourth incident involving an Indian-American jumping from the Golden Bridge in an apparent suicide attempt.
According to the Bridge Rail Foundation, a nonprofit organization working to end suicides on the Golden Gate Bridge, 25 people took their lives here last year and nearly 2,000 suicides have been reported since the bridge opened in 1937.
The state government is working to build a 20-foot-wide iron fence along both sides of the 1.7-mile-long bridge. However, the project, which was due to be completed in January this year, is behind schedule and its construction cost has jumped from 137.26 million euros to almost 386.64 million euros. Work on the project started in 2018.
