Infighting in erst Warangal Congress reaches boiling point

Prathap Reddy’s suspension has intensified a long-running rivalry between Prathap Reddy and former PCC president and MLA Ponnala Lakshmaiah.

Warangal: The Congress party in the erstwhile Warangal constituency is facing heightened internal squabbling as the general election looms. Infighting has intensified as multiple senior leaders vie for MLA tickets in various constituencies.

While Hanamkonda District Congress chairman Naini Rajender Reddy announced the dismissal of party leader and former DCCB chairman Janga Raghava Reddy after the latter announced his intention to run from the Warangal West constituency, in a new development, Jangaon DCC chairman suspended former MLA Kommuri Prathap Reddy.

Prathap Reddy’s suspension has intensified a long-running rivalry between Prathap Reddy and former PCC president and MLA Ponnala Lakshmaiah. While Lakshmaiah allegedly directed local party leaders to see Prathap Reddy suspended. Meanwhile, followers of Prathap Reddy pointed out that the party had not appointed a regional congress committee and questioned how he could have been suspended by a non-existent committee.

The infighting led to physical clashes between the two factions during Bhatti Vikramarka’s yatra in Abdul Nagaram village in Jangaon district on Friday. In the Pakar constituency, there was also a fight between followers of former minister Konda Surekha and senior leader Engala Venkatram Reddy as they both wanted votes from the constituency.

In all other constituencies except Mulugu, infighting continues, causing headaches for the already divided party-state leadership.

“If the high command fails to quell internal squabbles, it should come as no surprise that BRS wins all MLA seats in the upcoming election,” a senior congressional leader said.
