Injured Hussamuddin takes bronze at World Boxing Championships

The Telangana boxer had to withdraw from Friday’s semi-final after suffering a knee injury.

Hyderabad: It was a mixed day for Telangana boxer Muhammad Husamuddin, who claimed his first bronze medal at the IBA World Boxing Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The boxer suffered a knee injury in Wednesday’s 57kg quarter-final clash with Bulgaria’s J Diaz Ibanez and had to withdraw from Friday’s semi-final.

“I have mixed emotions right now. I’m disappointed to have to withdraw from the semi-final. I want to win gold for my country and have been training for this moment. But unfortunately I injured my knee in the last 10 seconds of the quarter-final The opponent was a rough boxer who fought very hard. Although I was disappointed, on the other hand, I am very happy that I won my first medal in this competition. This is my first time in world boxing Championship, I won the medal,” he said in Tashkent.

The Nizamabad boxer revealed that he worked hard for this fight. “We arrived here 14 days before the race and trained hard. Expectations were high. I was eager to prove myself. This medal is very precious. I would like to dedicate it to my father Mohd Sam Sam Uddin and my nine-month-old daughter Haniya Firdous,” he added.

The two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medalist revealed he hopes to get back in shape ahead of the Asian Games. Talking about the extent of his injury, he said: “I have to go for scans now. Once they are done, I will get a clear picture. I have to get back in shape as soon as possible. My next goal is to compete in the upcoming Asian Games. Win a gold medal,” he revealed.

Another Nizamabad boxer, Nihat Zarin, recently became world champion and Husamuddin was proud of her achievement. “Nizamabad ki mitti mein hai. I am very proud of another Nizamabad boxer to be the defending world champion,” he concluded.
