New Delhi: Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan took three wickets each, while B Sai Sudharsan struck an impressive 62, David Miller and Vijay Shankar in the Gujarat Titans’ seventh match of IPL 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium He played a key role in a six-wicket win over Derry Capitals on Tuesday.
On a pitch with good rhythm and bounce, Shami and Rashid went 3-41 and 3-31 respectively, while Alzarri Joseph dazzled at 2/29. Chasing 163, Sudharsan and Shankar hit some nice solid cricket for the fourth wicket in their 53-run partnership after conceding three wickets in a power play.
The pair also alternated strikes while looking for boundaries. That meant they were able to maintain their run rate through risk-free cricket before Shankar went down in the 14th over.
Needing 46 runs in the last five rounds, it was anyone’s game until Gujarat tipped their way. David Miller pulled Mukesh Kumar to six and then released at long range for the same result. He then hit 20 with a powerful four to break cover at the end of the 16th inning.
Sudharsan scored 50 off 44 balls from Anrich Nortje with a delightful slope in the 17th over, followed by a massive spin for six over fine legs. Miller then outscored Khaleel Ahmed by four in the 18th before closing the chase with 11 balls.
Wriddhiman Saha caught up to a flyer, rammed and lobbed impact player Ahmed across the line in succession before finishing with a superb six. Shubman Gill welcomed Mukesh offside with two well-placed fours in the ensuing overs.
Nortje hit his first ball of the game, disrupted Saha’s ball with a scorching pinch in the third, then uprooted Gill’s off-field with another energetic pitch on his next over. tree stump.
Sudharsan wowed everyone by scoring six off Nortje with his scoop, before blasting Ahmad for four over the middle wicket. But the left-arm pacer pulled out of the strong game by forcing Hardik Pandya into a long ball play, which he passed to Abishek Porel.
Sudharsan survived Kuldeep’s appeal after a power play as replays showed a flat line when the ball went over the bat. He joined forces with impact player Shankar to get Gujarat’s chase back on track.
While Sudarshan took full advantage of Mukesh’s width to get him into extra cover, Shankar produced some eye-catching boundary shots, such as a shot high over Kuldeep’s head that gracefully got away from Mitchell Marsh and Ahmed.
53 overs ended as the crowd recovered their voices when Marsh trapped Shankar lbw and got a decision in his favor via DRS. Miller survived Kuldeep’s lbw, and replays showed Ball lost a leg stump in the 15th inning. From there, Miller and Sudharsan effortlessly brought Gujarat home.
Shami got some help from the pitch early on in an eventful opening game. A swingman on the road against Warner disturbed the stumps outside the gate, but Bail was unmoved. Although he also reduced his size, Shami could not find control, giving up seven widths.
Prithvi Shaw then took over for Shami in his next over, making a cut at the quarter-skid cordon. But Shami had the last laugh and Xiao stopped him halfway. The veteran Indian pacer found more success with the new ball by casting Marsh.
A grumpy Warner pushed on and he tapped Shami to four before pulling Pandya over square leg for another boundary. He welcomed Joseph with a series of boundaries in the seventh – turning to a trailing spot after a halftime hit.
Just when it looked like Warner was at the crease, he cut Joseph in the ninth. Joseph then flicked off Rilee Rossouw with a savage 146km/h delivery that took the edge of the shoulder of an awkward dodge and was brilliantly caught by the back diving point.
Rookie Porel looked good in his 20 off 11 balls, including pulling Yash Dayal over square leg six times after being hit in the helmet by a Joseph bouncer before Rashid knocked him out in the 13th over.
Sarfaraz Khan pushed his way despite Josh Little conceding a ball in the 12th over and Axar injected some momentum to pull Rashid and Joseph wide and wide before hitting a stunning loft-six on the leg-spinner.
Safaraz’s painful stay on the next ball in the 17th ended after a sweep of Rashid when he missed a sweep to the deep square leg. Aman Khan swept Rashid hard for six but cut straight in to add cover to the leg-spinner.
But Axar went on to make some late shots for Derry, clearing a six over long-range Josh Little. In the final, he hit a lovely one-handed shot off Shami’s long-range shot for six. But two balls later, A’ar cut into deep bunkers for a big shot. Anrich Nortje’s last four balls took Delhi over 160.
