Hyderabad: Due to teacher shortage, Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) academics are mainly for children of central government employees including defense and paramilitary personnel.
The problem reached a tipping point this school year when some KVs in the city announced that some elementary classes would be closed for one or two days a week.
“This issue of declaring a holiday started a week before Christmas. A week later, the school declared a two-day holiday again. Upon enquiry, we were told there was a shortage of teachers,” said a parent, who did not want to be named. Parents complained that the school had declared every elementary school class an alternate day off.
A total of 35 KVs are in operation in the state. Minister of State for Education Annpurna Devi told Parliament in July 2022 that there were 602 teaching staff and 53 non-teaching staff vacancies in the state as of June 30, 2022.
Telangana Today, the director of the city’s KVs, admitted that not only their schools but also KVs in South India are facing a shortage of teachers. It was also admitted that due to the lack of teachers, the school announced the holiday of some classes in the primary school.
As of June last year, there were 602 vacancies for faculty and staff in the state’s KV, while 454 were hired under contract.
With Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan’s recent announcement of recruitment for teaching and administrative positions at 1,249 KVs across the country, many contract-based staff have resigned to pursue their aspirations for permanent positions. These resignations, combined with the transfer of teachers, are affecting students’ academic performance.
“The school was supposed to have 30 teachers but there are only 20 staff. Some contract staff have quit their jobs for recruitment and some teachers have been transferred. Due to the school having vacancies, we have arranged to recruit contract teachers this weekend and next week. Interviews are conducted and the school will be staffed with full staff,” KV HM said.
KV Sangathan has been issued to 239 principal posts, 203 vice principals, 6,414 primary teachers, 594 postgraduate teachers, 1,305 trainee postgraduate teachers, 303 primary school teachers (music) and 355 librarians in KV nationwide received a direct recruitment notice.
