doha: Kylian Mbappé scored twice and provided an assist for Olivier Giroud as France beat Poland 3-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of Sunday’s World Cup.
The Paris Saint-Germain striker now has a championship-leading five goals and the 2018 champions are just three wins away from the defending champions.
Robert Lewandowski scored from the penalty spot in second-half stoppage time for Poland. No country has repeated the World Cup in six years since Brazil won back-to-back trophies in 1958 and 1962.
Italy is the only country to win back-to-back in 1934 and 1938. France’s quarter-final opponents will be either England or Senegal.
