Hyderabad: Football is a game played between two teams of 11 players each on a rectangular playing field or pitch marked with lines. The surface of the court can be grass or artificial turf. In the case of artificial turf, the surface color must be green only, and it should also meet the FIFA Football Turf Quality Concept Standards.
The two longer boundary lines are called the touchlines, while the shorter one is called the goal line. The playing field is divided in half by a halfway line.
Dimensions of the playing field
The length of the court (sideline) must be at least 100 meters (110 yards) and a maximum of 110 meters (120 yards).
The width of the pitch (goal line) must be at least 64 meters (70 yards) and a maximum of 75 meters (80 yards).
Note: Lines drawn should not exceed 5 inches or 12 centimeters.
Target
The goal consists of two goalposts and a horizontal crossbar and is located in the center of the goal line.
offside rule
The offside rule is one of the most difficult to understand, but it is this offside rule that makes football fun and enjoyable. Introduced in 1883, it was designed to deter football players from lurking near the team’s goal.
When passing the ball, the offensive player must have at least two defensive players between him and the opposing team’s goalposts.
Let’s look at an example:
A – the player who passed the ball
B – The player that Player A passed the ball to
C – Defender 1 or Goalkeeper
D – Defender 2 or Goalkeeper
When the ball leaves A during the pass, no part of Player Y’s body can go beyond Player D or C and the ball. When a player is in front of the ball and is the second-to-last defender, it is called “offside”.
Card
In general, football has two types of cards. They are displayed by referees or received by players for infractions such as unethical behaviour, breach of the rules of the game and delay of play.
yellow card: A warning is issued for the first time a player engages in misconduct during a match.
red card: Considered a severe penalty in football, a red card means a player is sent off and no further substitutions are allowed.
notes: If a player receives two yellow cards during a match, that player automatically receives a red card.
Position
Positions in football explain the roles and responsibilities of each player. There are four main positions in the game, namely goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward. While only one football team member is designated as the goalkeeper, the number of midfielders, defenders and forwards can vary depending on the team’s strategy.
goalkeeper position
The goalkeeper is an important position in football, and his main job is to prevent goals. Goalkeepers, also known as goalkeepers or keepers, are the only players allowed to touch or hold the ball with their hands. He can catch the ball with his hands, kick it and pass it to his teammates. Often seen in the penalty area, goalkeepers wear different clothes from their teammates to help referees identify them. A player must not touch or kick the ball while it is in the goalkeeper’s hands.
Defenders
The defender’s task is to protect the goal from the opponent’s attack. Most teams use three to five defenders in a game. They are further divided into two categories – centre-backs and full-backs. A central defender, also known as a central defender, is stationed in front of the team’s goal to prevent the opponent’s players from scoring.
The players you see on the pitch running either side of the centre-backs are known as full-backs. When teams use 3-5-2, 3-4-3 and 3-4-1-2 formations, the full-backs are sometimes called full-backs.
midfielder
Midfielders are the players who are stationed between the two goals in the center of the football field. They play both defensive and offensive roles by maintaining possession, passing the ball between defenders and strikers, and spreading the offense apart.
Midfielders can be divided into different categories according to their team formation.
Midfielder: They act as the link between defense and offense by controlling the game from the center of the pitch. As well as passing the ball to their central midfielders and forwards, they also try to score goals themselves.
Central defender (CDM): A CDM is a midfielder who sits in front of the defenders and defends the opposing team’s attacking players.
Central Attacking Midfielder (CAM): The attacking midfielder, known for his killer passes, is the most advanced player. They focus on assisting goals and giving strikers chances to score.
winger: A winger is an attacking midfielder positioned near the left and right touchlines of the pitch. Their main job is to attack and fight against the opposing team’s defenders, create shot chances, support the forwards and score goals for the team.
forward
Strikers close to the opposing team’s goal are assigned the task of scoring goals for their respective teams and creating scoring chances for other players. They are skilled players, physically strong as they always try to create space for the offense. The striker who plays in front of the goal is called a center forward.
Free kick
It is a method of restarting the game where a free kick is awarded whenever a player commits a foul or violates the rules of football. There are two types of free kicks – direct free kicks and indirect free kicks. A direct kick is when a player can kick the ball directly into the goal. But in an indirect kick, the player cannot kick the ball directly into the goal. The ball must be touched by another player before a goal is scored.
corner kick
This is a way to restart the game when the ball crosses the goal line and no goal is scored. It always starts from the nearest corner of the pitch where the ball crossed the goal line.
penalty
A penalty kick is usually awarded to the attacking team whenever an opposing player commits a foul inside the penalty area. Penalty kicks are taken from the penalty spot and only one goalkeeper is allowed to defend.
ball
Balls used in the game must be spherical and made of leather or other suitable material. The circumference of the ball must not exceed 70 cm and be less than 68 cm. Balls must weigh between 410 grams and 450 grams and can be replaced if damaged during play.
